Summary of K1

Tests
Starting in K1, baby Cola is introduced to tests in Kindergarten which include BM, English, Chinese, Sciences, Maths and Moral. We have been putting our efforts in teaching him to do well in each test.
During the first semester, it is quite tough for us (for baby Cola and me!) especially in BM. He can hardly read any word from his textbook which drives me really mad! I accused him for not paying attention in class and he was getting frustrated and exhausted from all the scolding and threatening by me in forcing him to learn everything. Yes, I admitted that I have been pushing him too hard without realizing it. All that is in my mind was: If he cant read the word, he definitely can't understand it as well, how is he going to do the test paper? After that incident, I talked to friends, mothers of his classmates and teachers, I understand better how the test is conducted. Teacher will be reading the questions to the students and the students only need to choose the correct answer.

Lesson learnt:
1. Relax, mother! This is just K1!
2. Talk to the teacher when you have question.

Then, in Semester 2, I changed the way doing revision with him. We make it a habit to do revision from time to time in a very short period for example: 5-15 mins everyday. I noticed that he is doing better in his BM too. I believe he can understand better at school too, either the teacher has changed the way she teaches or baby Cola has found the way to absorb. We will tell him to get good results every time he has test. He told me this not only once: "Mummy, it is not necessary to get 100%." I know what he means. But, as parents, we must have some expectation to guide him to do better. I remain in silent until one fine day, I thought of a very good answer to make him know the importance of getting 100%.

My little story goes like this:
Baby Cola, in life, we have many tests to take. For example, if you want to drive, you need to pass the driving law test. There are 50 questions, and you need to score 47 and above to get a pass. which means, you can only get 3 questions wrong at most. So, you will need to practice from now on, to try your best in doing well in your test.

This works on him very well because driving is his biggest dream right now.

Doing revision no longer involved in tears towards the end of Semester 2. In fact, I believe he can do the test paper without the guidance from teacher too.

Competitions
Over the year, there a few competitions: Story-telling, Singing and Colouring. Last year, Aden is one of the story-telling winners. We have been putting a lot of effort in training him at home, forcing to practice. This year, when we tried to do the same to him, he kept finding excuses to avoid practices. Well, we do not push him hard this time. We told him, if he is really interested in telling story, we are happy to guide him. But if he is not interested, it is fine. We just want to make it clear that it is his choice. And he lose in the competition. He is unhappy when he knew it even though he tried not to show it. It is definitely a very good lesson to learn.

Teacher was very surprised by the result, and talked to me when I sent him to school one day. Baby Cola saw teacher talking to me. So, I told Cola about our conversation which is basically about the reason why he did not win the competition. He just listened quietly.

When the Singing Competition coming up, both teacher and baby Cola himself are very excited and agreed to sing the song chosen by the teacher. So, the parents has to take up the responsibilities to let the kids practice at home. Baby Cola was very cooperative this time. He practice it whenever we told him to.

But he was still a little nervous on the day. He told me, he still cant follow the music. So, I told him just do his best. He did his best and win a prize. He was all happy!

Solo on stage during the school annual concert.

During the school annual concert, he enjoyed himself very much to be able to appear on the stage for a few times for performances from singing solo to dancing in group and also receiving prizes. I went to the back of the stage a few times to help him get changed and talked to his little friends. There is a little boy telling me some sort of joke which I did not catch him and maybe I looked a bit too serious and Baby Cola quickly explain to me that his friend is a joker and he is just telling a joke. :D I guess my boy must be worrying that his mama is going to scold his little friend! LOL! I am really happy to see his transformation from a shy boy to a more outgoing little man.
